1 International Symposium on Saffron Biology and Biotechnology (ISSBB)



ISSBB is a forum of scientists who work on saffron. We will meet for the first time in a unique atmosphere for discussions and exchange of knowledge.

ISSBB is organised by the Institute for Regional Development (IDR) of the University of Castilla-La Mancha, Albacete, Spain. The aim of the symposium is also to promote contact between junior and senior researchers involved in the development and use of saffron in different areas of science.

The ISSBB is organised under the auspices of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS). The 1st ISSBB will be held in Albacete, Spain from Wednesday October 24th to Saturday October 27 th 2003.

Scientific Program

The program will consist of an opening lecture and four main sessions including lectures and invited presentations selected from the submitted abstracts, as well as poster exhibition and discussion. Session 1 will focus on saffron biology (botany, taxonomy, evolution, physiology, pathology, molecular biology and biochemistry). Session 2 will cover studies on saffron crop techniques, breeding and tissue culture. The relevance of food technology and other industrial applications will be discussed in session 3. The recent advances on different aspects of saffron biomedicine will be the central topic of session 4

SYMPOSIUM BANQUET

ABSTRACTS

Submission deadline 15 May 2003.

Registered participants are invited to submit abstract(s) of their recent scientific work. In addition to the main topics of the symposium, abstracts related to any relevant area of saffron research can be submitted. Receipt of the abstract will be acknowledged by e-mail. All abstracts will be refereed by the Scientific Committee and Session Chair and a criterion for rejection will be lack of originality. Abstract submission should follow the instructions and be filled into the forms which can be downloaded from the web page. Abstracts should be submitted either through the website or by e-mail to the Scientific Secretariat. The Scientific Committee will invite authors of selected abstracts to present their results orally (20 min). Notification to authors will be given in early July. Abstract submission requires registration of the participant.

PROCEEDINGS

The proceedings of the meeting will be published by the ISHS in its series Acta Horticulturae. Instructions to the Authors are available on the website www.actahort.org/. Alternatively they can be sent to authors of accepted abstracts upon request. Papers must be submitted during the meeting and will undergo regular peer review.

EXHIBITION

A commercial exhibition will take place during the four days of the conference. Companies interested in booking space should contact the Organising Secretariat by e-mail or fax to make the reservation.

ESTIV BURSARIES

Submission deadline 1 June 2003.

ISSBB will consider requests for financial assistance to attend symposium from students or young scientists in educational or non-profit research organisations. Requests from Eastern Europe are welcome. The criteria for eligibility are included in the application form. This financial assistance is subjected to external grant and industry support. At present, the availability of such funds cannot be guaranteed.

SAFFRON SOCIETY GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The Saffron Society First Organising Assembly will be held during the symposium.

REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT

Attendance is limited to 100 participants (fully registered). Registration will be accepted on the basis first come, first served. Fill the attached Registration Form and return it to the Scientific Secretariat by e-mail. Within the following 10 days, payment should be made either by bank transfer or by credit card: send a copy of the bank transfer, or your signed authorisation on the Registration Form to the Organising Secretariat, to charge your credit card account. Alternatively, you can early register on-line following the instructions on the ISSBB website and send the signed Registration Form within the following 10 days. Your registration will be acknowledged by the Organising Secretariat. Registration includes attendance at the scientific events, 4-nights accommodation in a single/double room, full board, mid-session refreshments, social events, VAT, abstract book.

Deadline for registration: 15 April 2003. After this date a surcharge of 100 will be added.

VENUE



The venue will be Albacete, a city located in Spain, between Madrid and Alicante (also Valencia). The hotels and the conference venue are at 15-20 minutes on foot from the centre.

Accommodation. Participants will be accommodated in double rooms or double rooms/single use. There is a limited number of single rooms. The Organising Committee encourages participants to share rooms with other colleagues, whenever possible.

Transport. Albacete can be easily reached from Madrid either by rail or by car.

By rail: Metro train connections run between Madrid airport and main railway stations Chamartin or Atocha, every 5 minutes (ticket: 1). From here Alaris, Talgo or Altaria trains Madrid-Albacete leave almost every hour (timetable will be sent) and the ticket costs about 24. The trip to Albacete lasts 2h. Here you will find taxi service that will take you to your hotel. Frequent trains from the cities of Valencia and Alicante are also available ( 18).

By car: Albacete can be reached along the A-III toll highway (Madrid-Valencia) till Onrubia where it joins the highway N-301 to Albacete.

CANCELLATION AND REFUNDS

Substitutions of registered participants by other participants can be made at any time providing you give clear instructions to the Scientific Secretariat (MariaLourdes.Gomez@uclm.es) and the Organising Secretariat (...@....).

Full refund (minus a 10% administration charge) will be possible if cancellation is notified before September 1, 2003. Before October 1, 2003, 50% refund will be given. After this date, regrettably no refund will be possible.
